Enhancing the View: The Best Window Treatments for Hotels

With domestic and international travel rates still not back to where they were prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many hotels are taking this time to undergo long-planned renovations. In addition to exterior updates, interior spaces such as lobbies, common areas, and bars and restaurants are also getting a facelift. Guest rooms, too, are among the most popular remodel projects, and that includes window treatments.

What are window treatments?

A window treatment is any type of covering on the interior of a window that can be opened to allow outdoor light in, and closed to keep it out. In the past, hotels have opted for the practical solution: heavy, room-darkening curtains with a sheer window covering beneath to ensure both privacy and comfort. However, as they strive to make their accommodations more attractive to travelers and set themselves apart from their competitors, those same hotels are modernizing their window treatments.

Below are some of the best window treatments for hotels, and each offers a wide variety of styles, colors, and materials to match your commercial project.

Window Blinds

Many of us are accustomed to the convenience and versatility of blinds in our homes, but we rarely see them in hotel rooms. This will likely change as many larger chains and even smaller and boutique hotels take steps to enhance the guest room experience. Look for wide vertical blinds to accent sliding doors, as well as horizontal window blinds made of wood, faux wood, composite, or fabric. At some higher-end properties, motorized “smart” blinds may replace the more traditional manual style.

Unlike blinds, which are individual panels connected by a cord, shades consist of a single piece of material that is raised or lowered by hand. This allows guests to easily adjust the light to their liking and make their stay more comfortable. Fabric shades may range from lightweight, nearly-sheer materials to thicker, more opulent textiles, and many manufacturers have introduced antimicrobial fabrics to ensure guest health and safety. Eco-friendly options are also available, including jute and bamboo window shades. In the image above, chic fabric shades are paired with blackout drapes in a partnership of style and functionality.

We tend to think of shutters as something that goes on the outside of a window, but interior shutters are a gorgeous accent that adds a decidedly elegant look and feel to any room. Plus, they’re easy to clean and the style choices are endless—from full-height louvered shutters to shorter, “café style” designs. Here, pristine white shutters offer a stunning garden view from a cozy bed and breakfast suite.
